Our heartfelt gratitude and deepest appreciation to our Guest-of-Honour, Mr Zainul Abideen Rasheed, for accepting our invitation and gracing this memorable occasion. Ladies and Gentlemen, 3 The SMCCI was formed in 1956 to assist local Malay businesses and promote cooperation and exchange of information for mutual benefits of its members. As a trade organisation that represents the Singapore Malay-Muslim businesses, the SMCCI feels obliged to assist the local Food and Beverage (F&B) companies to leverage on the growing food industry and enhance their business opportunities and competitive advantage. 4 We have received feedback from some Muslim companies within the F&B industry who are not able to reap potential business opportunities as they do not possess a Muis' Halal certificate. Being Muslims, they do not see the need to apply for the certificate, which is voluntary. 5 Some Muslim-owned catering companies also faced some difficulties as they could not bid for some government tenders and corporate contracts which require them to be Halal certified. As many fully-owned Muslim caterers are not Halal certified, they are unable to meet the eligibility requirement. 6 In order to facilitate fully Muslim-owned F&B and catering companies, the SMCCI has taken the initiative to develop and introduce a "100% Muslim-owned F&B Establishment" Membership Scheme. The idea was conceptualised about 2 years ago. 7 The main objectives of the Membership Scheme are : (1) to assist and enhance business opportunities and the competitive advantage of local Muslim F&B establishments, and (2) to certify that the Membership holder is a fully Muslim-owned F&B establishment. 8 We took quite a while to develop and implement this scheme because we need to address some administrative details and get feedback from our members. We worked very closely with Muis and we would like to express our deep appreciation to Muis for its full support and understanding towards this scheme. I especially like to thank Mr Abdul Rahim and Madam Dewi Hartaty of Muis for their valuable inputs in making this scheme possible. Ladies and Gentlemen, 9 An important aspect of the Membership scheme is that it is not a Halal certification scheme. It is a scheme initiated and administered by the SMCCI to inform the public and all relevant parties that the Membership holders are Muslims. Halal certification is the sole responsibility of Muis and rightly so. 10 Application for the Membership scheme is voluntary. It is open to local fully Muslim-owned F&B establishments - members and non-members of the SMCCI - that meets the Terms and Conditions of application. 11 A Certificate of Membership will be issued by the SMCCI to all successful applicants for display in their premises. The names of these establishments will be listed in the SMCCI's website for public information. The Certificate of Membership is valid for a period of one-year, which is renewable. 12 To assist the Membership holders in getting a bigger market, Muis has agreed to hyperlink their website to the list of "100% Muslim-owned F&B Establishments" in the SMCCI's website. Ladies and Gentlemen, 13 On this note, I am pleased to inform you that the Membership Scheme will take effect from today. Those interested to apply can visit the SMCCI's website or they can contact the SMCCI's office for more information on this scheme. 14 In conclusion, we hope that this scheme will benefit the Membership holders and create more business opportunities for them. 15 Once again, I would like to thank our Guest-of-Honour and all of you for making this event a success. Have a pleasant day. |
